Gemalto Bio-Sourced Smart Cards

Everyone is familiar with the card type uses we have today. They come in IDs, SIM cards and so on. But unknown to most are the dangers that lurk once they are thrown away. They emit harmful emissions and toxic fumes. But now Gemalto is set to change all that with their line of new bio-sourced smart cards. They are made from renewable materials which are easily recyclable. They are even come in eco-friendly packaging through recycled paper and vegetable inks which should reduce their environmental impact. These cards will be ready for mass production by the start of 2010.

Joule Biotechnologies SolarConverter System

Biodiesel was known to be made possible from plants but this is one system from Joules Biotechnologies that doesn't produces the same algae-based fuel by redesigning organisms and their functionality. They require no farmland to grow corn or other feedstock. They genetically engineered organisms that use photosynthesis to directly create the molecules that form the basis of diesel.

Their SolarConverter array system suspends these organisms in a solution within a light-permeable structure that looks something like a solar panel array. When directed to sunlight, the organisms turn CO2 and the sunlight into biodiesel. Certainly a new alternative to get some fuel in this time of crisis.
