How To Make Our Home Eco friendly: 5 Quick and Dirty Tips

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 03:52 PM PST

Are you wanting to know how to make your home more eco friendly? If so, then have a look at a few easy suggestions below.

When you think of a green home, you might picture big expensive solar panels on the roof or a multi-thousand dollar solar water heater system, but guess what. There are numerous inexpensive (and small things) you can do to make your home more sustainable without breaking the bank. See some ides below.

1. Water Flow – one of the easy things many with an eco consious bent do right away, is replace an old water intensive toilet, with one that is low flow and or conserves water. Many of the newer models are already by default more water light than older models. Sometimes just by replacing an older toilet to a newer one will save you water and in turn lower your monthly or yearly water bill. Definitely worth a try!

2. Lights – this is the tried and true classic many will start with. Replacing the traditional incandecscent light bulbs throughout your home with CFL energy efficient bulbs. Yes! these tend to cost more, but also last a lot longer and light up your home exactly in the same manner. Start here if you want a quick cheap fix but with a nice long lasting effect.

3. Cleaning – maybe you’ve already read that our indoor air is several times worse than outdoor air. This is partly due to the cleaning products we use to keep our homes clean and fresh. Too many toxic chemicals in a closed environment week after week is causing havoc in our homes, our bodies, our children, our food, etc. Don’t underestimate the way these chemicals can build up (and linger) over time, and some dont’ leave for a very long time after we have sprayed (dripped, etc) them throughout our homes. Switch out traditional chemical filled cleaners with cleaner, more natural eco friendly cleaners. Everyting from window washing to floor cleaning has an eco friendly alternative. Start at your local grocer and look in the cleaning isle. If not, go online and head straight to sustainable shops.

4. Food – another way to green your home is via the foods you cook, buy and ultimately eat. Going organic is one method as this type of food is grown without harsh chemicals and is about as natural as one can get without having a garden out back. But it can be expensive and many can’t quite afford it. However another (easier and less expensive) option is to ease up on meat, its no secret that growing animals for meat is one of the most destructive activities on Earth. The land, the water, the energy, the staff, it’s a ginormous endeavor in every state and city in the planet. Definitely not eco friendly at all. However if you prefer not to entirely give up meat, you can simply ease up on it and learn how to cook and eat meatless meals such as pizza with only veggies, pasta, rice and beans, more fruits and nuts, etc. You can also try the mock meats out that taste, feel and look like meat but carry less of the cholesterol, less of the fat, and don’t require as much of the Earth’s resources to create.

5. Weather-Proofing – here’s a drop dead simple (but highly overlooked) idea. Generally weather proofing your home from the elements such as rain, cold, snow, heat, light, etc can have an impact on your monthly utility and energy bills. Not too mention conserve more of the same indoors or out. If it’s cold out and you want to keep more warm air in, then weather-proofing your windows, doors, chimney, etc can help with keeping warm indoor air in. And vice versa, when it starts to heat up and you want cooler air kept indoors, you know what to try. Weather-proof your home!

Those are my quick and dirty tips for how to make your home eco friendly. There are of course many more, but these are a good set to begin with. You can then always upgrade and update till it’s about as eco friendly as you wish it to be.

If you’re wondering which of the many beverages, pops, juices and soda’s on the market are the most eco friendly?

Wonder no more, as Greenopia has updated their list of the greenest drinks on store shelves. This list mulls over many factors and rates the companies that produce the drink on a leaf level from 1 to 4, four being the greenest.

The beverage guide used Greenopia’s 4-Leaf rating system to disclose the environmental impact and health-effect characteristics of over 20 of America’s most popular mass-market beverages. This was an independent study conducted by Greenopia‘s Research Staff using an extensive list of test criteria including beverage container, ingredient analysis including product toxicity, supply chain, sustainability reporting, green building design initiatives, and history of environmental violations. The criteria data were gathered, calculated, and analyzed using Greenopia’s proprietary research methodology.

Among the highest rated were Honest Tea, Santa Cruz Organic Soda, Steaz and Odwalla. To view the full list and see the guide, visit Greenopia.

The MConcept by Lobo Concept

The MConcept seems like another version of the Segway or much of the two-wheeled transport solutions we see today but the thing is, it aims to be as eco-friendly as one would want. They were designed by Andre Monteiro which were made to help people in their daily chores.

The MConcept can be mounted on, where hands are used to help it navigate. It retrieves its energy from the wells with a store-up option in the detachable battery that can be reused to power anything else.

Planter’s Launches Eco Nut Mobile

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 06:06 PM PST

The Nut Mobile pictured above is part marketing ploy and part sustainable action on wheels. The van (or is it a truck?) is outfitted with numerous eco friendly features and is (of course) powered by peanut oil biodiesel.

The eco-friendly theme doesn't stop at the gas tank. The legume-shaped bodywork is crafted from a non-toxic epoxy, while the exterior graphics are crafted from vinyl with no volatile organic compounds. Glass, doorframes, and headlamps were repurposed from existing vehicles. Solar panels and a pop-up wind turbine help charge the deep-cell batteries, which in turn power the interior's audio system and LED lighting. Additionally, the wood flooring used within the cabin is fabricated from material reclaimed from a barn dating from the 1840s.

Aside from being a kid magnet wherever this Planters van goes, it also supports and represents eco enthsusiasts around the globe.

Washington Dentist Observes Above Average Eco friendly Practices

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 05:42 PM PST

A King County, Washington dentist has promised to take care of its dental clients as well as preserve the local community by observing above average  eco-friendly practices.

Drs. Dowd and Wu have educated themselves to ensure their dental office makes the most of their local recycling facilities. As a 100% Leadership Partner in Puget Sound Energy's Green Power Program, Signature Smiles has joined an expanding group of local businesses that obtain all their electrical power from renewable energy projects. An unavoidable consequence of performing dental work is that one produces quantities of mercury and other potentially hazardous waste. That is why this Bothell dentist has made a point of acquiring 5 Star Status from Envirostars to certify that its procedures for disposing of mercury and other toxic substances adhere to standards that are stricter than those set by the government.

We applaud Drs. Dowd and Wu for going the extra mile in environmentally-friendly dental practices.
