If you have several children and even if you don’t but seek something cute and functional to stow away your daily supply of nuts or trail mix, try this organic cotton snack bag made by Etsy seller Evelyn Fields. For the kids they’re the perfect size for all sorts of treats.

The handmade bags have a nice girly applique added to each and are sized just enough to hold a good serving or two of almonds or any other nut. The cool thing about this particular snack bag is that the liner is organic cotton, so no pesticides or other icky substances will contaminate your goodies inside.

Plus they’re just darn cute.

Super Bowl 2011 To Be Greenest Ever

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 11:59 AM PST

Maybe! According to the latest article on green gossip site Ecorazzi, Super Bowl 2011 might be the greenest ever.

Did you know that on average a Super Bowl game generates enough electricity to power 1,500 homes for one entire year? In other words, the big game is a mega-watt energy monster.

But when you think of what goes on at the Big Game, it should come as no surprise. This year the game is going to be held in Dallas, Texas and the following will be a part of the festivities:

  • 1,000 WIFI access points
  • 3,500 HD television screens
  • Jerrytron – the MASSIVE 20 yard line to 20 yard line (152 foot x 72 foot) Jumbo TV screen
  • plus more

However all is not bleak as officials at the Super Bowl also try to do their part to be as eco friendly as possible by recycling waste, donating left over food, using renewable energy certificates, planting lots of trees and using biofuel for their vehicular needs.

With an event this size it’s near impossible to not have gobs of waste, gobs of energy usage, etc but every little bit of diverting and or encouraging a less wasteful attitude helps to lessen the impact.

Hemp Soap Saver Bag

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 10:00 AM PST

Maybe it’s my Latin-American heritage, but I’ve never heard of a soap saver bag. Ever.

Till today that is, when I was looking to showcase cool hemp products and came across this hemp soap saver bag from Etsy seller Hippie Chick Designs. Come to think of it, my heritage might not have anything to do with it, but still I’m a relatively savvy gal and am truly surprised I’ve never heard of this item. Have you?

Regardless this particular soap saver bag is made with 100% natural hemp twine and because hemp is resistant to mold or mildew, it should not be a problem in your bathroom.

As for the purple color? The seller dyes the soap saver bag naturally with grape juice. Very cool.

Ajiro Eco-Friendly Bamboo Vehicle

Posted: 06 Feb 2011 07:27 AM PST

Bamboo is seen as one of the more popular materials for use in practically anything, even cars. And from the looks of it, we are seeing an array of transport solutions making use of bamboo material, the latest of which is the Ajiro, an eco-friendly bamboo vehicle designed by Alexander Vittouris.

This is a personalized bamboo-unit that looks more like a comfortable chair on wheels. It even has some leaves at the top and seems to be powered by good old pedal power. A good idea and hopefully something that will likewise curb the growing carbon emission problems we have to deal with.

Red Lentil Dal Soup Recipe

red lentil soup recipe

Are you one of those foodie types that loves soup even in the Summertime? If so, have I got a nice one for you today. The recipe below is courtesy of Tree Hugger and The Meat Lover’s Meatless Cookbook by Kim O’Donnel. Enjoy!

Red Lentil Dal Recipe

2 cups dried red lentils, rinsed
6 cups water
1 (1 x 1 inch) hunk fresh ginger, peeled but left whole
1/4 tsp ground turmeric
2 cloves of garlic, 1 peeled but left whole, the other chopped
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 bunch spinach (about 2 cups) washed thorough, stemmed, dried and chopped coarsely
1 3/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1 medium sized onion, sliced in half and then into half-moons
1/4 tsp cayenne
1 dozen grape or pear tomatoes, halved lenthwise
a squeeze of lemon (optional)

1. Place the rinsed lentils in a heavy-bottomed pot and add water. Add the ginger, turmeric, whole garlic clove and the cinnamon stick. Bring to a lively simmer, then lower the heat, cover and cook the lentils at a gentle simmer for about 30 minutes. Remove the ginger, garlic and cinnamon stick. Add the salt, taste, then add more as needed.

2. Add the spinach, give it a quick stir, and return the cover to the pot. The spinach will wilt quickly.

3. Meanwhile, in a 9 or 10 inch skillet, heat the oil over medium heat and add the cumin seeds. Cook briefly (15 seconds) then add the garlic and onions. Cook over medium heat, allowing the onions to brown at the edges, at least 5 minutes. Add the cayenne and tomatoes, stir to coat, and taste for salt. Transfer the fried onion mixture to the dal, stir, and serve. If using squeeze the lemon over the dish as a last minute flavour spritz.
