All Buses in LA Metro Are Now Green

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 12:44 PM PST

Now all the buses in the LA Metro area are powered by alternative fuels.

The buses now all run on either compressed natural gas, a combination of hybrid/electric and there’s one that is all electric. With the LA Metro area being one of the biggest metro transport areas in the nation with millions of people using public transport, this will (over time) alleviate some of the pollution derived from traditional fuel sources.

CNG, while not as clean as biogas or electricity, is still far better than diesel.  The switch to CNG means an 80 percent reduction in particulate emissions, and in a notoriously smoggy city like L.A., this will make a huge difference in air quality.  In addition to giving the city cleaner air to breathe, the switch also cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 300,000 pounds daily.

Rerip Says “Recycle That Surfboard Dude”

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 12:32 PM PST

Have a surfboard lying around that is collecting dust as each day passes by?

If you’re the proud owner of a broken down surfboard you no longer use, try recycling it through ReRip. This is a North County San Diego project where the goal is simple – reduce reuse reride!

The girls behind the site (Lisa Randall and Meghan Dambacher) want locals to recycle their surfboards through a drop off program where the boards get turned into new boards, sent to schools, or sold through their global online shop. It’s all part of their singular commitment to make the planet a better place.

Get to the garage, attic or basement and recycle that surfboard dude!

Berryplus New Eco Laundry Detergent

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 11:06 AM PST

In the laundry detergent space the new thing is less packaging and less overall volume in general. Berryplus is a new laundry detergent product that takes this message to heart and appeals to green consumers nationwide.

According to the company’s blog, Berryplus uses 30 percent less packaging than standard jug detergent, requiring 3.67 times fewer trucks to transport the stuff. The product comes in 2, 10 or 20 packs with 40, 60 and 100 packs coming soon.

The detergent itself is, as mentioned, super-concentrated and contains 95 percent soapberry-extract (yep, soapberries) as well as vegetable glycerin, olive leaf extract and a small amount of food-grade preservatives. Berryplus also works well in cold water and is produced in the U.S., giving it further eco-cred.

The Raindrop Mini Collects Water for You

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 09:16 AM PST

Here is a well-designed way to make use of water, a scarce resource that has become hard to collect in some countries. The invention is called the Raindrop Mini, an eco-friendly brainchild by Studio Bas Van dere Veer.

The device fits in-line with the drainpipe and channels rainwater into a removable jug; rather than demanding you accomodate a water-butt, water is collected into the watering can itself. The solution is a great idea to water plants and store water the eco-friendly way.

The Raindrop Mini is actually available in Europe right now but prices remain to be unknown.

Pedal-Powered Snow Plows

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 09:14 AM PST

This DIY solution may have come out a bit too late considering the Winter season is over for some part of the globe. But for the ones that want to get ready or are actually victims of climate change, this is a DIY snowplow to check out.

Firefly Workshop has come up with a DIY pedal-powered snowplow which is made from wood and a couple of old bikes. The front of the plow is raised and lowered using a pulley and rope system. The plow is used to push the snow into a few piles which can later on be shoveled off.

The idea is neat but then again, users still have to do some work by hands which shouldn't really be a big deal if you want some conservative snow plowing on your end right?

Super Sexy Planters Made from Recycled Stiletto Heels

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 09:10 PM PST

What does an avant-garde designer do with heels that have lost a bit of luster?

How about recycle them into super sexy one-of-a-kind planters. These planters carry a story and a name and are created with lots of love by Etsy artist Rachel Mahlke. Each one is handmade and features a truly awesome design or color set. The one pictured above is dubbed the Lemon Tart Stilleto Planter. Loves it!!!

This is a size 7 stiletto heel, upcycled of course into a new life. I removed the top of the shoe, sanded it, drilled holes for drainage, and then planted it with spiky-headed haworthia plants.

This shoe is lime-green-yellow and glows in a blacklight.

The haworthia succulent plants are some of the most undemanding; they’re perfect for those of brown thumb! They’ll do well in an office or a kitchen. Just allow them to completely dry between watering. In return, they’ll repay you with a stark reminder of how hard it is to…well, to be a woman.
