Women In Rwanda Create Banana Fiber Maxi Pads Business

Aided by Harvard MBA graduate Elizabeth Scharpf groups of women in Rwanda are getting the help they need to create micro businesses.

It all started when Elizabeth got wind of the fact that a large percentage of the female population in Rwanda misses a large number of days from work or school because of a lack of access to sanitary products. After hearing of this, she decided to create something that would not only provide the much needed item itself, but empower the females by creating (and selling) the in-demand product in their own communities.

SHE is the project and it stands for Sustainable Health Enterprises, a micro business camp aimed at women in Rwanda. Through this initiative sanitary products are created from locally harvested bananas, which is then turned into a fiber that can be used for the maxi pads. SHE also teaches the women how to make the product, so they can sell it. This project is a work in progress and Elizabeth Scharpf deserves major credit for creating and executing an idea that sustains itself.
