We may yet see the world's first sustainable fusion reactor if the folks over at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California succeeds in this said project. This is a $2.2 billion project which stands to become the major supplier of fusion energy in the future.

The project is better known as the Miniature Star on Earth, where it will supply a quarter of the energy needed for the United States by 2050.
