Egg Shells May Solve Global Warming

Posted: 29 Oct 2010 12:20 AM PDT

It seems that some folks over at the University of Calcutta have made a key discovery, one that could resolve global warming issues. The membrane that lines in egg shells can reportedly absorb carbon dioxide, seven times its own weight which means gas can be stored until new eco-friendly methods can be found.

The eggshell is made of three layers: a cuticle on the outer surface, and a spongy calcium-containing middle layer and inner layer. The second and third layers are composed of protein fibers bonded to calcium carbonate.

The membrane, which is about 100 micrometers thick, is just below the shell. The group demonstrated that weak acid can be used to separate it from the shell for use as a carbon dioxide adsorbent. Until the proper disposal method is found, this discovery could provide some help for the meantime.
