Artistry Is Dead

Posted: 25 Sep 2010 09:12 AM PDT

Oh no it isn’t! It’s alive and well and creating quite a buzz at the new arts collective/streetwear store ArtistryIsDead.com. A label with exactly the same intentions as Buy Tees, to showcase untapped indie t-shirt talent from around the globe, except I review them and these guys sell them! What’s more each artist comes to an agreement with AID over charitable contributions, (kinda sounds vague to me but essentially worthy). Nevertheless, teething problems in the details department aside, a uniquely artistic t-shirt collection awaits you. The tees range from just $9.99 to $22 in all sizes (sweatshop free printing – American Apparel) which includes a few hoodies too. The designers include Regan Smith Clarke who does an incredible line in Art Deco style prints and tees at his own site as well as this one, plus Hestin Lostwood, Fernando Jimenez, and the street wear label Evolved Athletic.

Check ‘em out:

W.T.W.T.R Tee

W.T.W.T.R Tee
In case you’re wondering it’s an abbreviation for “What The Wild Things Ride” – most definitely influenced by the classic children’s picture book and possibly dumbed-down movie adaptation (although I’ve never seen it – not my cup of tea) “Where The Wild Things Are” – illustrated by the phenomenal writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak who had a fantastic knack for creating benevolent monsters – which seems like a contradiction in terms – but it’s true. Absolutely lovely design – courtesy of Evolved Athletic – perfect for all you big kids out there ;)

Russian Doll Tee

I’m not all that keen on the colour of the tee, but the design for this shirt is awesome, it’s like a slice of underground 1960′s Eastern Block folk art heavily influenced by rumours that there may be something called “Pop Art” out there in the world of the bourgeoisie. Very ballsy design – if you’re descended from Cockney roots you’ll know that’s a big compliment… Sizes XS-2XL $20 plus shipping.

Boston Tee

It’s a Boston Tee Party all in one shirt ;p I love this tee, I’m a massive fan of art deco poster design and Regan Clarke Smith sure knows his stuff. An authentic colour palette combined with some super slick old-school graphics creates an instant classic in my eyes. I’m not normally a fan of yellow tees either, so overcoming that prejudice impresses me all the further. Anything is possible with the right skills. Sizes XS-2XL $20 plus shipping.
