Max Rogers : Confessions of a Male Supermodel

Max Rogers Portrait final 2a If you have never seen Max Rogers before then you must have been living under a rock for the past year. He has done campaigns for Lee Cooper, Agent Provocateur and D&G, the latter of which was plastered on every billboard and bus.  He has been photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth, Steven Meisel, Solve Sundsbo, Mario Testino and drawn by me (yes I couldnt resist throwing that one in there).  To top that it off  he was on the cover of Italian Vogue's September 2009 issue. Which is a huge feat for any model. In short, he's had a spectacular year and we got to ask him about it.

Max Rogers Vogue Italia September 2009 Tell us a little about yourself -

I grew up in Bedfordshire, spending every spare second of my life kicking footballs around. I then moved to Huddersfield for University to study Marketing. I had originally planned to go to Cheltenham but I had a last minute change of heart, I looked at the map of England and saw Huddersfield nestled between Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield and decided that looked a fun place to be.  After graduating I spent some time in Leeds and Manchester, and it was around that time I met Storm so I decided to make the move down to London.

How did you start modelling?Max Rogers Joseph Sinclair

Having finished uni I started modelling. Initially because I was not sure what to do next with my life. I sent some pictures into a small agency in Manchester and they sent me to Milan. I didn't have any shots in my book and knew nothing about the industry. However, whilst in Milan I met Storm in the street as I was rushing to make a casting.

I hadn't expected to model for long at all and certainly never imagined that I would make it to the major fashion capitals of the world, but having met Storm I began modelling full time and went from there.

Max Rogers Nude GQ StyleDescribe your personal style?

I think my style is fairly unique, I like to experiment. I don't think I follow any one particular trend, instead I prefer to take aspects from the root of the trends. I like to interpret and what guess designers might have been inspired by and then develop my own style from there.

I like to take inspiration from all sorts including films, art, fashion, sometimes history and my own imagination. So I can often look different from day to day depending on my mood. I always tend to love Vivienne Westwood's stuff, particularly this season!

Also, having been fortunate to work with some amazing designers and stylists I have been educated in what makes good tailoring, I especially love Tom Ford and Bottega Venetta suits and I love any occasion when I get to wear a suit.

D&G time Max RogersIf you weren't a model what would you like to do instead?

As a kid I wanted to be a footballer which is very unlikely now! However I love to write and spend a lot of my free time writing so I'd like to think I would be doing that.

Do people recognize you on the street?

No. At least if they do, they don't make themselves known!

2009 was a phenomenal year for your career (Italian Vogue, D&G FW08/09 etc). What was the highlight of the year?

I think I will always look at my first vogue cover as a landmark moment in my career, as it probably is for any model. So I would say that was the highlight. It was also a really fun shoot to be involved with as well.

However I was lucky that the whole year was amazing, I got to have a lot of fun, work with some great people and see a lot of the world.

Max Rogers Elle Macpherson tatler What kind of jobs would you like to do in the future?

I am very ambitious and I hope to achieve a lot more in the industry in the future, however I try not to set myself specific targets and instead concentrate on enjoying the present. I just hope to continue progressing in the industry and I suppose the next level would be to land a fragrance campaign.

What's your favourite place to chill out/have fun?

. . . because I've been travelling so much this year I am really enjoying relaxing and being at home in London, especially in the spring! In my opinion there is no better place than London in the spring, as soon as the sun comes out Londoners come to life, we don't get a lot of sun so when it happens we appreciate it!

In general though, I just love being with my girlfriend and my mates, we are often in Blacks in Soho, which is an amazing little Victorian style, candlelit place. I also like Lost Society in Clapham, or Battersea Park in the summer.

Max Rogers Lee Cooper jeans You are in such great shape. What's your fitness regime like?

Its hard work! The first thing I ask in any hotel is where the gym is. During the fashion season its particularly important for me to train hard and stay healthy for work.

I try to get to the gym 5 times per week and I train very hard when I'm there. Having finished playing football I like to box for fitness and lift weights to stay in shape. At home it is a social thing as well, I train with all my mates most days.

Tell us something about yourself that most people would be surprised to know.

Sometimes peoples impression from the outside of male models are that they are dumb and self obsessed. I hope that is not the case with me!

Also, even though I am a model, I stopped caring what I look like a long time ago. I find it easier to do my job that way. That's not to say I don't take care of my appearance because I do that to be professional however If I became too protective over a specific hairstyle or something I might be disappointed if I had to change it for work.  I try to keep myself in good shape and stay healthy and I like to dress well as I'm interested in fashion, but I actually don't mind what I look like at all.

Special thanks to Max Rogers and Storm Models.
