Green Training Starts In High School [Video]

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 06:31 PM PST

Students in a Santa Cruz, California high school are being trained to learn how solar energy works, and in the video above they were taught to make solar model structures.

Eco Company visits a class at Natural Bridges High School in Santa Cruz, California. This class encourages students to get into green careers by giving them hands on experience with things such solar energy. On this day they were making model structures from cardboard that were powered by miniature solar panels.

I’ve heard of college training for green job preparation, but not high school. Till now!

How To Recycle Your Old Digital Reading Device For Cash

Posted: 14 Dec 2009 05:35 PM PST

sell your old ebook reader for cash

Digital reading devices have been around for approximately 2 years now, if you take into account when the Kindle came out.

Essentially enough time for a slew of them to already be in a landfill, or headed for one. So let’s look at one easy and profitable way to recycle some models. Buy My Tronics is a recycler based in Colorado that accepts used digital reading devices, even broken models. However expect the payment for a broken model to not be as high as one in MINT condition.

The way it works is you enter in the make and model of the digital reading device you have and its condition, then Buy My Tronics calculates a payment it will pay you to send it in to them. The item then will either get refurbished and sold, or recycled.

In the pic above, I mock entered in a MINT condition Sony PRS 600 and Buy My Tronics is showing it would pay me $160 if I send it in to them. Not bad at all for an old device I might no longer use.

A quick, painless and responsible way to recycle your old digital reading device.

The Lucet Lamp

Here are some logical lighting solutions for people who want to save some energy consumption. Good for use at night, they collect power during the daylight from the sun. The only thing is that they are positioned at the window, a strange angle to find lamps, but more importantly offer the lighting you will need once night time comes.

They collect and store energy on 2 AAA batteries which at are responsible for the light emissions you need at night. They are still a concept so don't go out looking for them for now.

Make Some Easy After Christmas Cash This Year By Recycling Your Old Presents

Posted: 13 Dec 2009 06:37 PM PST

kindle 1 ebook reader

Inevitably you will receive a series of shiny new gadgets this year for Christmas, to outdo the ones you received last year. So in with the new and out with the old, but wait!

Why not cash in by recycling a few of these old items?  Yes, you can get abit of after Christmas cash, if you send in old electronics and gadgets to several well known recyling companies who pay for the goods.

Lets take a look at a few of the best cash for gadget companies.

Gazelle - this company accepts a variety of electronics for cash, are well established and easy to deal with. Try them first.

Cell for Cash – this company as their name suggests is for cell phone recycling. Find your model and see what they pay on it.

Buy My Tronics – this one accepts alot of different gadgets for cash. Try them for odd items such as old laptops, PDA’s and even digital book readers.

Also keep in mind that they don’t all pay the same. One might offer you more than the other, so do shop around!

If the above companies don’t carry the particular item you want to get cash for, then Google the following; “item + recycling” and find the company which will accept your item. Nowadays just about any and every electronic or gadget can be recycled for cash, just do some online searching. I’ve seen everything from iPods to GPS units and Xbox game consoles accepted for cash. So do look around.

Usually the way it works is you go to the respective website, enter in your gadget brand and model then you get an estimate of what the company will give you in exchange for the item. You agree and send in the item, once received and approved you get a nice sweet check in the mail.

That’s it. Most of these (cash for gadget) companies vow to responsibly recycle the gadgets for you. But do check the company out to make sure they don’t just plan on sending your item to a Chinese or European landfill. Yes! some do this . So do your due diligence BEFORE sending anything anywhere.

Most are legit and work as promised. But always do your homework.

Try it now and let us know how it turns out for you, and if you score some nice after Christmas cash.

Do You Reuse Envelopes For Mailing?

Posted: 13 Dec 2009 05:22 PM PST

reused envelopes at post office

This is the question posed by reporter Mariana Sears of the Burlington Free Press who frequently reuses envelopes herself.

Marianna has been reusing envelopes for about five years now and she recently started to wonder if this was any sort of a new trend with all the eco consciousness going on. She wanted to interview local post office employees to ask if they see alot of reused envelopes flowing through the mail, but says reporters are not allowed to interview post office employees. So she did the next best thing and went straight to the director of communications at the USPS.

She found out that not only was the director not at all aware of this being a BIG trend right now, but that it could potentially delay mail if not done correctly. So below are a few tips given on how to reuse envelopes correctly at the US Post Office.

How to reuse an envelope

• Completely cross out or cover the old addressee and old remittent

• Remove the old stamp and use a plain white label to completely cover all the old black or fluorescent orange barcodes

• Flip envelope and reuse inverted side as new

Marianna did also ask a few customers if they reuse envelopes, and several do and do so regularly. So the question again is do YOU reuse envelopes? And if so, how has your experience with it been. Any delays or returned mail.

Let us know below in the comment area.
