British Tees at MySoti

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 02:01 PM PDT

London-based MySoti.com is one of very few British companies online offering a crowdsourcing t-shirt service comparable with the likes of Threadless. Don’t expect any big prizes for designers, they take a more pragmatic approach to pricing allowing their creatives (from around the globe) to add the commission of their choice to their own products. There’s a good selection of talent at the store and plenty more in the wings awaiting your votes. I really liked the look and feel of MySoti and decided to sign up as a designer myself. They don’t just sell t-shirts, they offer art prints and would you believe it lampshades too? That’s a new one on me, but I did have fun designing my own lampshade and have already submitted it along with a couple of tees for voting.

As a matter of interest I’m guessing the site’s name is based on the (slightly more) sophisticated alternative to the awful netspeak for laughter “LOL” meaning laugh out loud. SOTI means “smirking on the inside”. Then again I could be wrong and it could be a reference to sex on the ice, but that’d be a long shot ;) The site is pretty sophisticated too, with an ultra clean design every little interaction seems somehow smoother and quicker than most stores, fans and designers should find it a breeze to shop, vote or upload a submission.

Here’s my latest submission based on a piece of mine called ‘Pearly King’, basically a vision of an alternative reality where Elvis was born within the sound of Bow Bells. Let the Dick Van Dyke impressions commence!

If you’re a member at MySoti I’d appreciate a few votes! Here’s a few more up for the vote that deserve a boost…

Storm In A Teacup T-Shirt

Storm In A Teacup T-Shirt
Here’s a great use of the classic Japanese painting The Great Wave by Hokusai. Designed by Ross Robinson who from his profile photo where he’s wearing a Union Jack tee I’m guessing he’s British, then again featuring anything connected with tea in a t-shirt design is another big giveaway. I love this design, it’s deceptively simple yet beautifully drawn. Vote for it or buy it for £21.56 in all sizes and plenty of colours here – only available in a  men’s style?!

Epic Rock Paper Scissors Battle T-Shirt

This is a superb design by YAWN, I really like this designer’s sense of humour, and they have a really great talent for eyecatching illustration. There are a few more by YAWN worth checking out including Ice Is Nice! and Nerd Gets Hurt. If you fancy voting for any of their designs check out YAWN’s profile. Their Epic Rock Paper Scissors Battle T-Shirt is available for Girls, Guys and Kids in plenty of sizes and colours from £15.59 here.

Marilyn Sane T-Shirt

Probably my fave tee at MySoti right now this is the one that got away from Warhol, well if he’d been into early 1970s British Rock. I actually own a copy of the album “Aladdin Sane” by David Bowie, he was going through his Thin White Duke phase when he wrote it, although the make-up is straight from his Ziggy Stardust wardrobe. There are a couple of cool songs on it but try Lodger, Heroes or Low for the real deal. You can’t get more Pop Art than this shirt, a great design by RikkiB available for Kids, Girls, Guys and Onesies from £21.67 in a range of colours, vote for it or buy it here.

Why not vote for a few more, upload your own or even buy a few tees with a more British feel at www.MySoti.com?

Wind-Powered Knitter Made

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 12:19 AM PDT

Wind Energy may not be that popular but some folks can put the concept to use if they really try. Take the case of this one, a great solution for people who are into knitting. It is a DIY device made by somebody wandering about a Cul de Sac.

He was able to construct a device that made use of wind power whose only fallback is how yarn would be re-loaded when it all runs out. Essentially, the size of your scarf is only limited by the amount of yarn fed into the machine. Then again, this is one cool idea which can really go beyond just knitting.

Powerful Beauty with Marilyn DeMartini

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 06:30 AM PDT

Achieve Powerful Beauty with Bionic Beauty™
This week, public relations powerhouse Marilyn DeMartini shares her thoughts on Powerful Beauty with Bionic Beauty readers. Marilyn is owner of her PR Firm, PR Power; and specializes in marketing and relations in the powerboat racing industry. Find out more about Marilyn, her career, projects and writings at her website MarilynDeMartini.com. Talk about being a Powerful Beauty!

Powerful beauty is a well-known concept, for wasn't "Power is the best aphrodisiac" attributed to Henry Kissinger?

I find working out and eating well—creating a healthy, powerful body, are the main ingredients to creating "Powerful Beauty." Even if one is not a "classic" beauty, a woman can radiate confidence, strength and attitude and be seen as strikingly beautiful because of the power she radiates through her posture, carriage and smile. As a 54-year old PR professional (the "Power of the pen!" who works in the powerboat racing business) who works out daily, runs, practices yoga to balance the exercise and strives to maintain a youthful appearance, I am proudly and powerfully growing older and wiser. I find it flattering that people do not believe I am 50+, but I really don't care because I feel strong and beautiful—regardless of the laugh lines and the toll the sun has taken on my skin because I so enjoy the outdoors of South Florida. Am I beautiful? Perhaps not by model standards, but because I feel good about myself, I hope that I am seen as attractive because of my power.

New ways to browse Bionic Beauty

Posted: 29 Apr 2010 03:51 PM PDT

As I mentioned earlier this week, I’ve been doing some upgrades on Bionic Beauty. For those of you who (still) use Internet Explorer, you should now have full access to the drop-down navigation menu that is under my header graphic.

I also cleaned up those categories a bit- I still have a little more consolidating to do- but this should help everyone find articles by topic a bit easier.

If you’re a Bionic Beauty reader who uses Firefox, Chrome, Safari or another modern internet browser- things should look pretty much the same.

Achieve Powerful Beauty with the Bionic Beauty blog!

While I’m here with this “Site News”, I want to remind everybody about the search field in the very upper right of your screen. Simply type in what you’re looking for and hit the enter button on your keyboard.

Prefer to browse by brand? In the far right sidebar, there is a drop-down menu. Pick the brand you want, and then hit the “Go” button.

And for those moments when you just want to browse through the almost 2000 articles on Bionic Beauty, you can click on the “Surprise Me” graphic in the right sidebar. You’ll be magically whisked off to a random article! It’s a fun way to find some older stuff you might have missed!

There will be more upgrades launching soon… In the meantime, feel free to use the Contact form or comment below and let me know your thoughts, questions, or suggestions!

Stay Bionic,

Jami - author and editor of the Bionic Beauty blog
